App & Framework Hosting is now generally available from our London datacentre.

DDoS Protection

DDoS protected hosting, standard on every plan.

Every HostPanel plan includes always-on DDoS mitigation at no extra cost, from UK web hosting to game servers protected by 10Tbps+ of filtering capacity. Volumetric floods and application-layer attacks are scrubbed before they reach your server, and we never null-route your IP to make an attack someone else's problem.

What a DDoS attack actually looks like

A distributed denial-of-service attack floods your server with junk traffic from thousands of sources at once until real users can't get through. What that looks like depends on what you're hosting.

For a website or web app

Pages slow to a crawl, then start returning timeouts or 502/503 errors. Checkout flows fail, forms stop submitting, and monitoring lights up. Attacks are often layer 7: floods of seemingly normal HTTP requests aimed at your most expensive pages, such as search or login, so your CPU and database drown long before your bandwidth does.

The motive is usually extortion, competition, or simple vandalism, and the attack frequently arrives at the worst possible moment, such as a product launch or sale.

For a game server

Ping spikes into the hundreds, players rubber-band around the map, then everyone times out at once. Game servers speak UDP, which is trivially cheap to flood and spoof, so attacks are usually volumetric: raw packet floods designed to saturate the server's connection entirely.

The motive is personal. A banned player or rival community can rent a booter for a few pounds and attack mid-event. That's why unprotected game hosting effectively doesn't work, and why our game server network carries 10Tbps+ of dedicated mitigation.

Volumetric vs application-layer, and why the difference matters

"DDoS protection" is only meaningful if it covers both categories, because they fail in different ways and are filtered with different techniques.

Volumetric (layers 3-4)

Brute force against your bandwidth: UDP amplification, SYN floods, and reflection attacks measured in gigabits or terabits per second. No single server can absorb these; they must be filtered upstream by a network with far more capacity than the attack. This is what mitigation capacity figures like 10Tbps+ refer to.

Protocol abuse (layer 4)

Attacks that exploit how TCP and UDP work rather than raw volume, such as SYN floods that exhaust connection tables or fragmented-packet tricks. These are caught by stateful inspection at the network edge, dropping malformed or abusive flows before your server ever allocates resources to them.

Application-layer (layer 7)

Floods of well-formed requests, for example HTTP GETs to expensive endpoints or game-protocol join spam. Low bandwidth, high damage, and invisible to purely volumetric filters because each request looks legitimate. Filtering relies on behavioural analysis and challenges to tell a botnet from real visitors.

How HostPanel mitigation works

Always-on inspection with attack traffic scrubbed upstream, so your server only ever sees clean traffic.

Included on every plan

DDoS protection isn't an add-on or a premium tier. Every HostPanel product ships with mitigation enabled from day one, at no extra cost.

Always-on, not on-demand

Traffic is inspected continuously, so mitigation engages as an attack starts rather than after someone notices your site is down and flips a switch.

Filtering, not null-routing

Attack traffic is scrubbed and dropped while legitimate visitors keep getting through. We don't null-route your IP and take you offline to protect the network.

Built for game servers

Game servers are the most attacked things on the internet. Ours sit behind 10Tbps+ of mitigation capacity tuned for UDP game traffic.

Protects layers 3, 4 and 7

Volumetric floods, protocol abuse, and application-layer attacks are handled with different techniques, because one filter doesn't stop all three.

No surprise bandwidth bills

Flat monthly pricing means an attack doesn't turn into an invoice. You pay the same whether you were attacked or not.
